They say that to really get to experience a country, you
have to have lived with a local. Well we can't deliver
that, but we'll point you in the right direction. These
festivals are run by locals, for the locals. Visiting any
one of these events is like getting the best out of local
life. They are not festivals for tourists. Most are free,
unforgettable and probably make you never want to leave
Thailand! Many of the festivals are centered on a theme. For instance the Loi Krathong festival is the festival of Light. Here they light candles on bamboo boats and set them adrift on waterways. Songkran is the Festival of water. If you have ever had a water fight with water balloons as a child then you know what it's all about. But times that memory, and fun, by a million and that's level that Songkran is at. Bun Bang Fai is the Rocket festival. Here the local farmers ward off evil spirits by lighting bamboo shoots filled with gunpowder. Bring some ear plugs! It must be said that all these Thai festivals are important to the Thai people. They may enjoy overdoing their festivities but their customs must be respected at all times. Many of these festivals have underlying Buddist traditions and meanings behind them. Other important events are the opening of Suvarnabhumi airport and bringing in the Chinese new year. |
